I remember in my Arabic class we were going over the alphabet and the teacher was like there’s no ‘P’ etc and this white girl was like wait what but my names Paige and my teacher was like lol then we’d pronounce it as beige and she was so offended I’m crying thinking about it
One of my mom’s friends, Hugh, went to France and they had a lot of trouble pronouncing his name because the entire thing was silent.
salut je m'appelle [REDACTED]
lol when I lived in France my host family had a friend names Hugh. We saw him and his family a lot.
They pronounced it “oog” and I didn’t know until the day before I left France that his name was Hugh. I just thought he had some weird caveman nickname 😭
that is hands down the funniest addition to this post
can people with harry potter urls just not fucking follow me
the way i am losing followers over this. GOOD. bye
If you want to read the work jkr ripped all of her ideas from, check out The Worst Witch by Jill Murphy. If you're looking for movies, there's movies. If you want a live action series, there's multiple seasons on Netflix and they're absolutely delightful.
The books started I think in 1974, and it's pretty obvious to me that jkr stole her entire setup from there, I'm not sure how she didn't get sued into oblivion, all she did was move the genders around.
There's the girl who thinks she's ordinary but finds out not only is she magic, she's legacy magic. Cue the fish out of water but magical destiny tropes. There's the best friends, one of whom is bookish and shy, the other more bold and from an old family. There's the rich, snobby blond rival from a legacy family that has been hiding dark secrets. There's the wise old bespectacled headmistress who knows more than she says. There's the dark haired, severe potions teacher who seems to have it out for the heroine, but may be hiding painful secrets (not a weird incel, either). There's the 4 different houses with the 4 different colors, flying broom lessons, choosing animal familiars, on and on and on. Jkr just. Stole it and changed the names, basically. So if you're looking for something new to get into, without supporting a transphobic woman who still has so much power and influence, try the Worst Witch. I can't promise perfection, but I do know the author wasn't transphobic and has passed on, so that is unlikely to change. Let jkr and her brand sink into obscurity. Shrink her platform to nothing. Mildred Hubble beats Harry Potter any day.
Imagine waiting for the coast guard or whatever to show up and instead a replica of 18th century merchant ship pulls up and tows you to the coast.
#in the article it says that the sailboat sailors were concerned because they could not be towed quickly because of the kind of boat#so they asked Götheborg what type of ship they were and warned that they would not be able to go above a certain speed#and götheborg went ' we are also a sailboat. 50 meters length. no worries :) '#and the poor sailboat sailors were just like ' That's not possible. they have to be messing with us' and then the ship Rolled Up (via bunjywunjy)
I'm crying. Here's a photo of a sailor from the Götheborg watching over the little sailboat in tow:
From the story:
We repeatedly emphasized that we were aboard a small 8-meter sailboat, but the response was the same each time: "We are a 50-meter three-masted sailboat, and we offer our assistance in towing you to Paimpol." We were perplexed by the size difference between our two boats, as we feared being towed by a boat that was too large and at too fast a speed that could damage our boat.
The arrival of the Götheborg on the scene was rapid and surprising, as we did not expect to see a merchant ship from the East India Company of the XVIII century. This moment was very strange, and we wondered if we were dreaming. Where were we? What time period was it? The Götheborg approached very close to us to throw the line and pass a large rope. The mooring went well, and our destinies were linked for very long hours, during which we shared the same radio frequency to communicate with each other.
The crew of the Götheborg showed great professionalism and kindness towards us. They adapted their speed to the size of our boat and the weather conditions. We felt accompanied by very professional sailors. Every hour, the officer on duty of the Götheborg called us to ensure everything was going well.[...]
This adventure, very real, was an incredible experience for us. We were extremely lucky to cross paths with the Götheborg by chance and especially to meet such a caring crew.
Dear commander and crew of the Götheborg, your kindness, and generosity have shown that your ship is much more than just a boat. It embodies the noblest values of the sea, and we are honored to have had the chance to cross your path and benefit from your help.
"Our destinies were linked for very long hours" is just knocking me out.
